NY Protest: HBO Pimping Prostitution as Entertainment

By KATYK MANTYK

NEW YORK—HBO’s offensive reality series ‘Cathouse’ is in the doghouse. ‘The Coalition Against Trafficking in Women (CATW)’, and the U.S Department of State’s Ambassador for the Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, Mark Lagon, picketed outside HBO Headquarters on 42nd Street on Tuesday.

They sent a clear message to HBO that the so-called reality show about a brothel in Nevada distorts the reality of the harm of prostitution and sexual exploitation, and plays a key role in the cultural mainstreaming of prostitution.

“It (HBO’s show) builds up the demand, it makes it seem like it is just fine to sell a woman for sex. You’ve got to realize that selling a woman’s body for 30 minutes defines the slavery of our time,” said Mark Lagon, currently visiting New York to promote the fight against sex trafficking world wide at the UN meetings this week.

As Olympics End, Tibetan Cause Continues in NYC

NEW YORK—Thousands of Tibetans and supporters lined Broadway from Times Square to Harold Square on Saturday, one day before the Beijing Olympics closing ceremony.

The last two weeks have not only seen the world’s top athletes compete in Beijing, they’ve seen protests around the world over Beijing’s horrendous human rights record.

Thousands of Tibetans and supporters have held a variety of large scale events in New York City, including a bicycle rally and speeches from protesters arrested during the Games, to raise awareness about the situation in Tibet—where activists say 1.5 million Tibetans have been killed since the Chinese Communist Party invaded the region in 1959.

Newport, A City from Scratch

NEW YORK—In his Midtown Manhattan office building, James LeFrak, 34, pointed to a nondescript shack in the photograph. The shack was surrounded by a desolate landscape and old cars parked in no particular order.

“This is the PATH station,” said LeFrak, referring to the Port Authority Trans-Hudson rapid transit system that now carries nearly 250,000 passengers 24 hours a day to and from Manhattan. “Of course at that time, in 1983, they weren’t running trains there regularly, the train only stopped there twice a day. Once in the morning and once at night. The passenger count was only seven passengers at a time.”

Now that shack has been transformed into a spacious glass-walled station, with four escalators and neatly manicured grounds outside. The transformation is one that has swept through the 400-acre area of Jersey City nestled on the Hudson River since the LeFrak’s grandfather, Samuel LeFrak, began building on it.

Lower East Side Food Co-op Still Surviving

By KATY MANTYK

New York—It’s a small place with big ambitions. The 4th Street Food Co-op in Manhattan’s lower east side is still hanging in there six months after the city’s biggest Whole Foods supermarket moved into the neighborhood.

When Whole Foods first opened in the East Village, there was much concern that the co-op would lose members and customers, but after weathering the last six months and still going strong, they trust their loyal and long time supporters even more.

“We can’t compete with Whole Foods, but we have customers who faithfully shop here,” said Geoff Silverman, an old member visiting the store to do a spot of shopping and socializing.

Genealogy Website Finds King of USA

By EVAN MANTYK

NEW YORK—A genealogy website has tracked down the heir to throne of the United States of America—that is, had the early Americans decided on a monarchy instead of democracy. The hypothetical heir is Mr. Paul Emery Washington, an 82-year-old retiree living in San Antonio, Texas, who is the descendent of first president George Washington.

President Washington was America’s beloved ruler after leading American forces in defying the odds and beating the vastly more numerous British forces in the Revolutionary War. Given a small twist of fate, Americans could be bowing down to the Washington bloodline today.

“There were those who suggested he become America’s first king. George, of course, refused. But what if he had been crowned king?” asked Ancestry.com, an online genealogy website who located the Washington descendent.

Movie Review: 'The Secret Life of Bees'

By KATY MANTYK
Epoch Times Staff

Based on the New York Times best selling novel, The Secret Life of Bees is a coming of age story without the sappiness that many directors think women want. Despite the women-centric story line, it’s not overly touchy-feely, nor should it be pegged a “chick-flick.”

Set in rural South Carolina in 1964, Bees is the moving story of 14 year-old Lily Owens (Dakota Fanning) who is haunted by the memory of her tragically killed mother.

Starring Queen Latifah, Dakota Fanning, Alicia Keys, Jennifer Hudson, and Sophie Okonedo, Bees features this ensemble of engaging women that take in Lily as she searches for love, redemption, and to fill in the gaps left by her mother’s passing.
